Serving Alcohol
If you would like to serve alcohol at your wedding, you will need to apply for a special occasion liquor license.
BYOB is NOT permitted. For information about applying:
Special Occasion Liquor License (class 1, 2 and 3) - Government of Nova Scotia
Application Form:
application-special-occasion-liquor-license-en.pdf (novascotia.ca)
It usually takes 2-3 weeks. We will need a copy of the the license behind the bar along with your receipts (in an envelope). Alcohol and gaming have everything they need from us, so you can ignore that part of the application.
Bartenders:
We provide bartenders for $30 an hour for one bartender and $40 and hour for two bartenders. Please pay them directly the day/evening of your event. If you have over 50 guests we highly recommend having two. That way they can keep an eye on the garbage, and washrooms as well. Jess is our main bartender, she is well well-versed in the history of the barn.
Drinks should be poured into cups, with the exception of drinks at dinner. (Some prefer to use wine glasses throughout the evening, that's fine). We suggest solo cups (they can match your wedding colors), for beer and coolers, and smaller cups for wine, hard liquor. This looks so much better in pictures than cans of alcohol and makes sorting/cleanup so much easier. The bartender(s) can pour the drinks into cups so cans can be sorted right away. Please let us know how many you would like, when you would like them to start. (Usually at least an hour before your ceremony to set up the bar)..
How much should you purchase?
Every wedding is unique, you usually have an idea who drinks and who doesn't. You can ask on your RSVP's what they would like to drink and go from there or ask a NSLC employee (our local NSLC is really helpful).
Some calculate an average of five drinks per person (removing children and anyone that does not drink).
Hard liquor is an oz. per drink and wine is roughly 5 oz.
Most charge $4-$5/drink, it usually covers your costs. Keep in mind, you can return any unopened, undamaged liquor as well.
