How to fill your box on a budget...Add a thin layer of cardboard to the bottom and layer branches and old logs over the cardboard. Then add a layer of plant/organic waste like dried leaves, then compost and finally a good quality soil. If you wish to plant root vegetables or tubers you would add more soil and compost than logs and plant waste.
The organic waste will decompose over time, enriching the soil and providing steady nutrients for your plants. Although the initial setup will take some preparation, raised garden beds are easy to maintain over the conventional garden. Occasionally you'll need to add a couple inches of compost and fertilizers to the top to replenish it. |
